Skills for Life

Our 'skills for life' cookery course is designed to teach the basics of cookery - and beyond - and will enable you to cook for yourself and others with ease and confidence.

We cover all the family favourites, some smart dinner party pieces, canapés, starters, cakes and desserts - and of course student friendly food.

Your Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award
If you would like to use our course for your Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold Residential please let us know and we will be happy to complete your assessment at the end of the course.

The course is an activity based personal training which fulfils the requirements of the Residential Section for the Gold Award.

All levels of experience and tastes are catered for.

Chalet host, nannies, jobs including catering
The Course Certificate will be good to add to your C.V. when applying for all sorts of jobs such as chalet cooks, nannies etc. - or if you are looking for part time work whilst studying.

It's a useful course to do in a Gap Year and great for self catering at University.

The course includes:

  • Food Hygiene information
  • Menu Planning and Nutrition
  • Information and training in preparing meals for guests who are on special diets for medical or religious reasons
  • Costings, Shopping Lists
  • Economic Purchasing and Storage.
  • Waste Reduction
  • Time Saving Tips (Great to help make time for that extra black run!)
  • Altitude Cookery Techniques and Recipe Adaptations
  • Equipment suggestions

Our routine

Course duration - Five Days

Students are invited to arrive on Sunday between 5pm and 6.15pm and an evening supper is provided.

Please see the location page for travel arrangements, we are able to meet buses and trains at Taunton.

We finish at lunchtime on Friday. Trains may be booked from 13.15, car travellers are free to leave at 12.45.

The daily routine starts with a light breakfast - last chance 9.30 - and the cooking course starts daily at 10.00 until 12.30 when we have lunch.

There is free time after lunch until 4.30 when we start the second session of the day, cooking until 7.00. Students are then free to relax after dinner (once the kitchen is clean - of course!) for the rest of the evening.

Courses usually include a social evening with the opportunity to choose and cook themed party food.

Students regularly come to us from the farthest reaches of the UK and Europe, with cheap flights readily available you are never too far away. Just remember to book early.
